âMY WIFE IS ILL,â ECHOED in her head all the next day. Preston stayed in her thoughts as well. He was as handsome, to her now, as he had ever been. But, to hear that his wife was ill, brought her no joy. He was married. She had to constantly remind herself of that! She thought that maybe she shouldnât tutor Max. Perhaps being so close to Preston would be too great a temptation, but to not be near him, given this opportunity would be unbearable! She had loved him so very long! If these few hours per week were all she was going to get, then she would take them!
Though hearing about Prestonâs wife gave her pause, she reminded herself that, Max needed her! Each time she thought of the two of them, she found herself tearing up. She graded Maxâs assessment, and as she had expected, his biggest problem was Trigonometry. That she could fix!
âWhat am I going to do?â she asked herself. She thought again, that maybe she should cancel the appointment until she could get a grip on her emotions. But, she knew that she couldnât. She hoped that maybe she could help them heal, and they could help her fill a little of the emptiness she felt without a husband, and now without her son. She knew that she couldnât abandon them, when Max needed her help!
Thursday evening, promptly at 6:00 PM, her doorbell rang. When she opened the door, she saw Preston and Max again dressed like they were going to church! Each one wearing a collared shirt, slacks and dress shoes that had obviously been shined!
âHi.â She greeted them, as she stepped aside to let them in. She hadnât expected them to dress up again. âHow sweet!â she thought to herself. She certainly wasnât worthy of the gesture. She was dressed casually again, as she usually was when she was home. She did her best to stifle a smile.
âHello,â they said in unison. Preston let Max in first. So, Sharon led them to her dining room. Preston, again seated himself on the couch.
âI would like to discuss Maxâs assessment with him, and then I will let you know what I think he needs, how many sessions he may need, and how much it might cost to bring him up to where he should be,â she explained. She was trying hard to sound professional, but every time Preston looked at her, she stuttered!
Preston nodded and smiled. She had magazines on the coffee table, but he chose to watch her and Max. It was quite unnerving, because he didnât move! He didnât look around the room, nor did he pick up a magazine to look through. He just watched her as she spoke to Max. She could feel his eyes on her. Once she looked up to smile at him, but his look was so intense, she had to look away. She didnât know how she would be able to help Max with Preston watching
